October News 2014
Hi Everyone!
Wow. What a summer! What an autumn! This summer was our best one yet, with more staff, more catering, more bread for the Talkeetna Spinach Bread food truck (which took second place for food at the State Fair!), more great reviews, and simply more of all of you - our awesome customers! A few highlights pictured here: Squirrel's 5th birthday, PTA's Bun to Bun Trail Run, new organic t-shirt debut, and our first Anchorage endeavor with a farm and bakery stand at the Alaska Native Medical Center campus. It seems like there is still so much to catch up on and at the same time, we're already thinking about the holidays. We hope you'll come by the Squirrel often as things slow down and say hi to some of the great new faces behind the counter - we're so happy to have Skye, Kimberly, Greta, Willow, Nate, Mark, and of course, Anita/me preparing and serving you delicious, thoughtful food this winter. Here are a few more reasons to stop in this month and beyond...
Second Saturday Art Opening
Budding painter and friend Katie Writer will display her oil paintings this month with a Second Saturday opening reception coming right up on October 11 from 3-5pm. Her show, entitled Dancing Hues, will be on display until early November. November's show is penciled in with new paintings by Tommy Robinson! Lots of open art months ahead so please get in contact with Anita if you would like to have a solo or group art or photography exhibit at the Squirrel.
Fall Bread Classes
The Art of Bread Shaping: Sunday, October 19, 1-4pm - Come into the kitchen at Flying Squirrel Café to learn how to create bread shapes such as baguette, boule, pan loaf, braid, rolls, fougasse, and epi. This hands-on class will include participation, demonstration, discussion of pans, baskets, cloths, scoring, and tools, as well as different crust treatments and oven tips. Sweet & Decorative Breads: Sunday, October 16, 1-4pm - Come to the Flying Squirrel Bakery Café where owner Anita Golton will share her secrets for making beautiful breads. Participants will help prepare pumpkin pecan sticky buns, cranberry lemon ricotta Danish, and challah dinner rolls – just in time for Thanksgiving! Register through Alaska Folk School online here or by calling 733-7111.

There must be a new crop of young children that love to cook AND that love Halloween! We always have a great time preparing these creepy treats that are fun to make and fun to eat such as: deviled eyeball, mummy on a stick, apple jaws, spooky cat cookie, ghost toast, witch's hat and witch's broom, and pumpkin rice ball! Classes usually fill up so register early! Prepayment/preregistration required. Call or stop by Flying Squirrel to sign up!
Anchorage/Willow Bread Shares
SO happy to make more bread! Especially in the winter. We're trying to set up a winter bread share for Willow and Anchorage! PLEASE E-MAIL US IF YOU ARE INTERESTED so we can get you the details. Here are the basics: prepay for 14 deliveries throughout the winter late October to late April, every other week to a convenient pick up location. For the prepaid amount you will receive 1 baguette and 2 loaves of bread plus some baker's choice treats! Flying Squirrel bread and goodies coming soon to Anchorage and Willow!
Indoor Farm Stand!
Brian had a very busy and successful season with Talkeetna Grown veggies from Birch Creek Ranch! The final harvests are in and the Squirrel welcomes this opportunity every fall to help sell some delicious locally grown produce over the counter. Currently you can get fresh brussel sprouts, celery, tomatoes, green tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, and chard while they last. Plus, we hope you will consider supporting our challenging small town, small farm endeavor by going out of your way to buy Talkeetna Grown kale, cabbage and potatoes for the better part of the winter!
